Sankey Canal Phase 1 Improvements – New Funding award

A Pilot scheme to regenerate Sankey Canal has received a further funding boost this week.

The derelict canal section linking Fiddlers Ferry Marina to Widnes has already been awarded £70,000 from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) REVIVE land regeneration initiative which is led by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

This funding will be used to undertake essential assessment works including structural surveys of the canal and further studies of the park and water wildlife habitats.

Works will ultimately provide better access and new opportunities for recreational use and enjoyment.
 
Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd have now confirmed £50,000 of funding for this projects and the Environment Agency £20,000.

A newly formed Project Working Group comprising representatives from the Environment Agency, Sankey Canal Restoration Society, Dallam and District Community Anglers Group and Scottish & Southern Power, are all working directly with the council on this pilot project to support, develop and oversee future improvement works.

Cllr Alan Litton, executive board member for environment and transport at the council said: “This further financial support is a tremendous achievement which will result in real improvements being made to this important site. The canal forms an important part of the town’s industrial heritage.”

Richard Tracey, Head of Environmental Quality at the NWDA said: “The REVIVE Programme is helping to tackle the legacy of Brownfield land in Cheshire and Warrington and to create vibrant, productive, high quality green spaces that stimulate economic activity. I am delighted the additional funding will enhance the site further.”
